Chestburster + Here Kitty Scene Analysis From "Alien" (1979)
The opening shot is an eye level, mid shot showing a man sitting at the table. It could be a P.O.V shot from someone else sitting at the table watching him. You can see some food in shallow focus which takes the main focus off the food and more on the man, yet the food is has still been shown in the shot so the mise en scene here shows you that they are obviously eating a meal at the table. The man starts coughing which obviously shows he begins to get into distress. The editing in this scene has a lot of cross cutting from another person at the table to the man who is now starting to choke up and bring attention to him from the other characters. Other people are starting to panic where as the editing keeps cross cutting to a man who seems quite calm.He is also in shallow focus which places more importance on him. This, to me, shows a contrast between calm and collected to the chaos that is beginning to unfold.
There is a point where the calm man suddenly gets up. Although there is no dialogue, the mise on scene here shows me that he has got up suddenly as the situation has gotten more serious and he has realised that. It makes me feel like some big scene is about to take place. The lighting is quite high key throughout the whole scene, the surroundings are fairly well lit however when the man is thrown onto the table there is suddenly a much brighter light, almost like a spot light that shines down on him. This light on him makes the viewer be able to see him more, and just makes him more in the centre of attraction of the scene. It almost looks like, to me, that he is on an operating table also as they usually have a high up light shining down on the patient, and the man is clearly having a problem with his body, so a medical problem which makes it seem like an operating table even more. Everyones clothes have some sort of colour to them, however the man suffering seems to be wearing all white which gives the idea that he is an innocent victim of something and is not evil, and the pain he is experiencing is not deserved. The camera angles keep switching from a fairly neutral, eye level shot showing the side of him - almost like someone is sitting at the table watching him, so nearly a P.O.V shot - to a high angle shot. The first angle shows all the people trying to hold him down and gain control over him, it shows lots of movement of everyone so adds more fast paced chaos to the scene whereas the high shot focuses more on just the man on the table, particularly his upper torso/chest area which could forsee later events in the scene as it makes that part of him look more significant than the rest of him.
The diegetic sound of everyone trying to hold him down and the man coughing and struggling suddenly changes when blood hits his top. He lets out a scream and it causes everyone to move away. There is a few seconds of just silence. This for me really made the scene significant. The silence mixed in with the facial expressions of the other people and they way they jump back really portrays the fact that what is happening to the man is very confusing to them and certainly not normal, The looks of pure shock just make you want to keep watching as it certainly gives the impression that more things are about to happen. The blood on his top is also obviously red, and his top as mentioned before is white. This again gives the idea that he is an "innocent victim" as the red colour of the blood can symbolise evil whereas the white top symbolises innocence The act of it splashing on to his top could mean that his innocence has been tarnished and he is now evil. There is now a high angle shot to show the thing coming out of his body. There is then a mid shot of everybody else which shows how the feel about the situation, shows they are scared and very unfamiliar with the situation they have suddenly been placed in. The extreme close up of the thing coming out of his body really lets you see what it is and shows the viewer it is not normal. The tracking shots of it shows it's importance and all attention is really focused on it at this point. It is in shallow focus to again place more focus on it, yet in the background you can see the man it just came out of shaking, almost in a fit to remind you that it just came out of him and is possibly evil. The focus changes to deep however, as it runs away from the scene as it shows you the expressions on everyone elses faces as it flees. The closing show here is a close up of one of the mens faces, which shows shock and confusion This scene definatly shows the viewer that the film is a science fiction film, yet some may view it as a horror also. One thing that does seem to be a theme in this scene is the idea of birth. The man seems like he is almost placed on an operation theatre table then sort of gives birth to the thing.
In the here kitty scene, the opening shot shows a close up of a man and it is raining on his face with ver low key lighting. The mise on scene here shows you that immediately it seems uneasy and gives you a feeling it is a horror scene. The fact that it is raining indoors justt makes it seem miserable and it gave me the feeling almost right from the start that something bad was going to happen. There is a high angle shot of him which is very significant. It sets the scene. It shows he is alone and very vunerable. It shows that where he currently is, it's dark and nobody is around. It also gave me the impression that the should could be a P.O.V shot of someone/something "watching him from above" but at this point I wasn't entirely sure.
There is some diegetic sound here of chains moving. There is a medium shot of him walking slowly. It almost seems like he is searching for something but you can see that he is uneasy as he is moving slowly. This shot also shows that there are a lot of bizarre objects in the room. I immediately thought upon viewing it that it would be a great place to play hide and seek, which then made me think that maybe something was hiding and was out to get him. The whole scene to me here just made me feel tense and scared. There is still the diegetic sound of the chains moving. I felt here that i was wondering why the chains were moving as he wasn't touching them which portrayed the idea that he is not alone. The mise on scene shows that he is kind. There is a close up of his face to show his expression as he finds a cat, and he smiles and calls is kindly. The respect for the animal and the way that he is reacting to it being there just gave the idea to me that he is a good person.
He is in shallow focus, and you can see something move behind him. The shallow focus meant he was most significant there, yet your attention was definately brought to the background. The fact that it was blurred meant you couldn't quite see what was there, which built suspension and curiosity as to what it was. The cross cut editing back to a P.O.V shot of the cat shows it backing away hissing automatically gave me the idea that my suspicions of something not being right and that somebody/something else is there was right. It gave me the impression that something more was about to happen. The tracking shot of the unknown figure creates even more suspension as you want to find out what it is. More is added when he doesn't know what is behind him and you're just waiting for him to turn around. It made me feel tense. The closing shot in this scene is a close up of his face again, there is more light on his face this time. The way his head is tilted looking upwards and the fact that there are shadows moving across his face shows that something is infront of him and it is a lot bigger than him.
To Dave/John, where the spaces are I plan on adding screen shots but my computer won't let me do it as my internet isn't nice to me. :(

Hanna - Film Analysis
In one of the more action packed, violent scenes of Hanna
there is little dialogue however the mise en scene here almost tells you
something bad is going to happen. In the opening shot both of the characters
look messy. The man is dressed in a suit, however his top buttons are undone
and his jacket and trousers are crumpled which could give you the message that
he used to be In more control, or have some sort of power as his clothing
indicates authority however as it is now crumpled and dirty and he has a cut
down his face implying this power he once had has been taken away. The girl
looks similar. However, her clothes are very plain and simple yet also dirty
and un tidy. She is obviously young and she has white hair. Her hair could
symbolise her innocence and purity as a child.
The close ups of the characters faces showcase their facial
expressions well, you can clearly see that they are both distressed. This
distressed mood is highlighted even more by the expression on the mans face as
he sees the car pull up through the sheets. It almost foretells a future scene
in the film, as the mise en scene here almost tells you that something
significant and possibly dangerous is going to happen. Here the man seems in control as he tells the
girl where to go and goes to confront the people in the car himself, where as
he protects her. However, the sheets are very narrow, almost like a path which
makes it seem like the girl knows exactly where she has to go which does give
her some sort of control on the situation also. A tracking shot with shallow focus follows the man as he is
running towards the car. This pulls your attention to him only, and shows you
where he is running to. The P.O.V shot of the man showing the car door opening
in front of him is very effective for showing an action scene as it brings more
excitement into the scene as you immediately feel alarmed by the fact that he
almost got hit by the door, whereas if that was from a long shot it wouldn’t be
so significant and memorable.
In this scene a new character is introduced to us. She is
first seen quickly reversing her car after seeing the man running away from the
van and there is a close up of her in the car showcasing her facial expression which
indicates quite severe concentration. There is a contrast between her and the
other characters. She is very well presented, in a suit and has a clean and
expensive looking car whereas all of the other characters seem to be quite
rough and battered looking. She has seen the man running, however he has not
seen her. The way she suddenly moved as soon as she caught sight of him could
either mean that she is going to protect him, or do quite the opposite. It is
unclear here who she is and what her role is, and whether she is good or bad. I
feel that because I don’t know who she is I am immediately more encaptured in
the film as I want to see what’s going to happen and whether she’s going to
play a big part in the storyline.
At one point when the van is chasing the man, there is a
medium shot of the man running and a shallow focus. This, for me, brings my
attention on the man running but the van in the background is still significant
as it’s seen, yet blurry. I think this technique is good here so you keep your
focus on the main character of this part of the film, yet you don’t completely
forget about the others. There is an over the shoulder shot from in the car,
almost like a shot from the drivers point of view where you can also see the
man running, yet it looks like you’re looking out of the car window at him This
gives you a clearer view of how close the van is to the man which can build
anticipation as the van gets nearer. As the van is involved in a collision with
two other cars, you can tell that the drivers are annoyed by the use of mise on
scene. They have an annoyed facial expression however the most significant part
of mise on scene used here is the man in the passenger seats actions. He
angrily climbs out of the van window, so is obviously very determined to go get
his target. He must jump over another car to get to him and there is a close up
of his foot strongly hitting the bonnet of the other car leaving a dent which
to me shows his strength and anger which indicates that something violent is
about to happen between him and his victim. The fight scene is in a playground
which to me is significant, as the playground equipment to me links back to the
girl we saw in the opening shot. Playgrounds are supposed to be innocent places
full of fun and children, however obviously here that is not the case. It
reminds me of the girl as she is supposed to be young and innocent yet she is blatantly
caught up in something serious.
The weather during this whole section of the
film is a dreary, grey sky. It looks cold and all colours are dull and toned
down. This to me indicates the nature of the scene, and gives you a feel of
what the scene is going to be like right from the first shot. The next part of
the film is the most dramatic part to me, where it can make you feel a little
emotional. Even through this small section of the film I think a relationship
is created between you and the main man as it’s obvious that he’s on the “good
side.” There is non diegetic sound
throughout the fight scene but it cuts off as he kills the last man, showing
that the fight is over. He turns around and his facial expression is clearly
shocked and scared which indicates something significant is about to happen. There is a close up of the ginger women seen
before with her gun. This shot makes the gun stand out more, especially during
the over the shoulder shot where you can clearly see that the gun is pointing
at the man which creates a tension as you wait for whats going to happen. He drops to his knees which to me symbolises defeat and
could foretell that he is about to get shot.
In the closing shot the girl is seen still running away, yet
she hears a gun shot and drops to her knees. Although we do not actually see
the man getting shot, the use of mise on scene in the film implies that it was
him. Her dropping to her knees is significant in the fact that she obviously
knows what’s just happened. The camera then pans into her face into a close up
to broadcast her emotions to the audience.

The Lion King
The Lion King - Induction Project
To pick something for this task was easy, as my thoughts went straight to "The Lion King" as soon as I heard I had to write about my favourite film. Whether this is because i'm a massive Disney fan, or whether I'm just obsessed with this film I'm not sure but the point is The Lion King is a film I have watched over and over again, which is funny as it actually came out two years before I was born in 1994! I remember the first time I ever watched it was when my dad bought this American animated film for me on video and my five year old eyes lit up with joy from the moment he pressed play. The opening scene of this film, for me, is one of my favourite parts. It's where you find out the roles of Mufasa and his wife, and of course Simba has just been born. The thing that makes this scene most memorable to me would have to be hands down the music.. "The Circle Of Life" is a song which I think everybody I know is familiar with, it's just such a perfect fit for the scene. I think the directors Roger Allers and Rob Mink made an excellent choice with the backing track selection here.
A good film, to me, is a film that has some kind of emotional impact on me. Whether that be happy or sad it has to make me feel something and this film certainly delivers this. Slightly embarrassing but I'll admit it anyway, the scene where Mufasa dies trying to save Simba due to Scar's plot always has me in tears.. To me it's sad as Mufasas character is portrayed as a good spirited king, who was just trying to protect his son and has always done a good job protecting his land and he did not deserve to die. The way Simba reacts to his death is also really sad, as he almost can't believe it and obviously still needs his dad as he's very naive and believes Scar's lies.
This film really is a must see, It has made $951 million worldwide (as of 2011) and is the highest grossing 2D film in the U.S. It even has two academy awards. I'd be highly surprised if you haven't already seen this movie, but If you haven't I really recommend you watch it A.S.A.P as you won't be disappointed!
